Anxiety Treatment at Counseling for Change
Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health issue in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults age 18 and older. The good news is generalized anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, and specific phobias are highly treatable. Cognitive Behavior Therapy has been shown to be highly effective in treating anxiety disorders by working on two aspects:
- Cognitive therapy teaches people how to change thoughts and underlying beliefs feeding excessive worry and nervousness over everyday situations.
- Behavior therapy helps people face their fears in small manageable steps through systematic exposure to the feared situation with a goal of eliminating the negative emotional feelings connected with the event.
CBT emphasizes a warm, safe, and empathic therapeutic environment as in traditional forms of therapy.
